The X Factor heads to Chicago where they are hoping for some great talent like they found in Miami and Dallas. And Cheryl Cole is back to judge! What is up with that? McKenna and Brock are the first couple up. They began singing for fun four years ago and Brock says it was the best thing that happened to him. He looks at McKenna in a funny way and Simon catches it and asks if they are dating. She hesitates and says no, then Brock’s face falls. Hmmm…interesting. The two sound great and they get four yes’s to move on in the competition.
Can the rest of the performers do that well? Nope. Several people show up and can’t sing. Simon even asked one, “What the bloody hell was that?” Yikes. Lots more people come up and down. Then someone shows up on stage and says she is auditioning for the judge spot. Judge? Hello? Simon says she is 6 months too late. Lots of rejections.
The next hopeful drove nine hours to audition. His name is Skyelor and he is 16 years old and hopes to win so his mom can quit her job. He decides to sing country and he starts out sketchy, then the music has a glitch and he stutters for a second. The track cuts off and he kept singing and did a better job. He said he came too far to stop for that. Simon even admits he was impressed. He ends up with 4 yes’s!
J-Mark gets his shot. He is a philosophy student – who suspiciously looks like Cochoran from Survivor! He’s not, but sounds like him when he talks too. But can he sing? Well, maybe but he is so creepy in his “dancing” that his voice isn’t what they focus on. He sings Creep and Paula comments it is fitting. Then he keeps going and sounds decent. Will he get four yes’s? He did!
Simon referred to it as Planet Paula and they went in to a montage of all the freaks that have showed up in costumes and talked about aliens and all kinds of crazy stuff.
Then a man, Josh, shows up and wants to sing At Last, by Etta James. Simon is stunned and shakes his head, but when he sings, it sounds pretty good. Really good. He takes his own turn on the song, makes it a bit jazzy and has the crowd at the first line. Most definitely four yes’s there! Standing ovation by the crowd and the judges.
Back to the weirdos…a mother and daughter duo show up. The Good Girls start to sing and then it falls apart from there. They slaughter Marvin Gaye and the judges don’t really know what to say…the girls can’t even hide behind accompaniment. Simon says it is the worst group he has ever heard in his life. No movement, no life. Ouch.
Drew, a 14 year old girl from Arizona came out and LA seemed to like her. The crowd liked her selection of Justin Bieber, but Simon questioned it because LA signed Justin! Drew started to sing, made the song her own and did a great job. Simon loved her and what she did. LA told her she was special. Four yes’s and she is off to the next round.
The show moves to Seattle and there are a few misses on the stage. Peet, a 21 year old, says he wants to be a teen heart throb. The judges love it. He sings Famous, by Bruno Mars. Can he make it his own version and wow the judges? Nope. Simon says the singing was terrible. Paula says his timing was great with the dance. They say no, but think he will be on TV someday.
A boy band is up next and want to impress LA by a version of a song he wrote. Is it gutsy or stupid? They are called For Shore and answer every question with “For Sure”. Cheesy. But then they sing and it seems they do pretty well. But the real question is – what will Simon think? He liked them. They all did and got four yes’s!
A few more hits and misses grace the stage. They let a lot of contestants in it looks to be an interesting show once all of these auditions are done. How many winners do we have coming in? Simon and LA like the women who show up scantily clad. Then Nicole puts it to Simon and sings a Mariah Carey song that is awesome. Paula and Nicole are together is a battle against Simon, who seems quite annoyed with them. They also appear agitated with him. Nicole…very much so.
Then Tiah takes the stage and wows them with her spirit…but not necessarily her singing. She did it without music and LA didn’t like it, but Simon loved it. Then the judges fought over it…in front of her. You know it was going to go 2 – 2. It came down to Paula and she said no. Simon threw things and the crowd booed. LA asked if she could do anything that would make one more yes. She took a few deep breaths and came out with another song. Did it change anyone’s mind? Paula still said no and Nicole said she needed to work on her vocals, but she was giving her a yes. Will Nicole and Simon be buddies now? We’ll have to see tomorrow when the auditions wrap up…
