WWF star Randy Savage died today in a car accident in his home town of Tampa, Florida. Savage, a.k.a. Macho Man, suffered a suspected heart attack at the wheel of his vehicle and lost control. The accident happened around 10am this morning local time, according to his brother, Lanny Poffo.
Savage was driving his 2009 Jeep Wrangler and veered across a concrete median through oncoming traffic and had a head-on collision with a tree. He was transported to Largo Medical center, where he died from his injuries.
Savage, who was famous for his cowboy hats, sunglasses and flashy outfits, was one of the most colourful pro wrestlers in recent U.S. history. He began his WWF career in 1985 and became famous for his catchphrase “Ooh yeah!” and his long-time endorsement of Slim Jim beef jerky. He starred in many flashy TV commercials to promote the product.
Earlier this month, Savage celebrated his first wedding anniversary with his new wife, Lynn.
Fellow pro wrestler Hulk Hogan wrote on Savage’s Twitter page: “I’m completely devastated. After over 10 years of not talking with Randy, we’ve finally started to talk and communicate. He had so much life in his eyes and in his spirit, I just pray that he’s happy and in a better place and we miss him. We miss him a lot. I feel horrible about the ten years of having no communication. This was a tough one,”
An autopsy is scheduled to be carried out on the pro wrestler’s body tomorrow, to determine the actual cause of death. However, from the way he lost control of his vehicle, a heart attack is suspected.
