Houston (48 when she died this past weekend) was born in the state’s largest city, Newark. Reports claim that the family want to hold her funeral service in an 18,000-seat arena there.
Whitney Houston’s picture appeared on the electronic board outside the Prudential Center arena, one of the nation’s busiest entertainment venues, on Monday night.
Police say that Whitney’s body was taken to Van Nuys airport in California for the flight to the east coast. Apparently, she was flown home to New Jersey in a private jet owned by film star and producer Tyler Perry.
A small group of Whitney Houston fans gathered outside the Whigham Funeral Home in Newark playing her songs, singing and lighting candles as her body arrived.
The singer’s family are also thought to be considering having a smaller service at the New Hope Baptist Church, where Houston’s family members have sung over the years. Flowers, balloons and candles have been left outside this building too.
Whitney Houston was found dead in the bathtub in her suite at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in LA on Saturday, hours before she was supposed to appear at a pre- Grammy Awards party. She was submerged in the bathwater and apparently unconscious when found by members of her entourage, police said in a statement.
They attempted CPR and alerted emergency services but Whitney was declared dead at the scene.
There has been widespread speculation regarding the cause of death of the singer who had struggled for years with drug and alcohol addiction. Prescription rugs were found in her room and she was reportedly drinking heavily the day before she died.
An autopsy is now complete but a verdict will not be announced until toxicology test results are returned, which could take up to six weeks.
