The winner of the UK’s 5th season of Big Brother, and so far the only transgendered winner of the worldwide contest, Nadia Almada, has attempted suicide. She had recently been evicted from the Ultimate Big Brother house.
Ultimate Big Brother is due to finish today in the UK. The short season was tagged on to the end of Big Brother 10 after it was decided that this would be the final UK Big Brother season. The ‘Ultimate’ season brought together past celebrity and (once) ‘ordinary’ contestants to compete for the title. As the only transgendered Big Brother winner in the world, Nadia was assured a place, but once in the house, she just wasn’t the old Nadia we knew and loved.
A good few pounds heavier and with a more caustic wit and shorter temper, Nadia caused fireworks throughout her stay, even reducing TV presenter Ulrika Johnson to tears on more than one occasion. But her real downfall was in telling Big Brother 10 winner, Josie Gibson, that John James, whom she has fallen for in the house, was not genuine in his feelings for her. These doubts sown by Nadia resulted in Josie, the real underdog but interesting addition to Ultimate Big Brother, escaping from the house.
The show’s fans, who had once loved Nadia enough to vote her their winner, soon lost patience with her temper and tantrums. She was the third person to be evicted from UBB, and just a couple of days later she took an overdose of painkillers and prescription drugs, saying her life wasn’t worth living after she had been booed by the crowd upon her eviction. For a woman who has made her name – and her money – from being a reality TV personality – it seemed that without public popularity, there was nothing left for her to live for.
Nadia was found by a friend, slumped in her bathroom. She was taken to hospital by ambulance, but declared fit to return home later that day.
How serious was she? Was the overdose a shameless publicity stunt? Who knows? It’s only known that she declared her intention to commit suicide to a Sun newspaper reporter who interviewed her upon her eviction.
