‘Today’ Matt Lauer to be Fired if Ratings Don’t Improve?

Filed under : Celebrity News

There have been rumors that NBC will fire Matt Lauer if ratings don’t improve for the”Today” show by February. One report was set straight by another.

An insider said this to RadarOnline:

“News executive Alexandra Wallace has told NBC bosses she will have to replace Matt if the ratings continue to tank. The ‘Today’ show has always been considered a cash cow for the network. It dominated the morning news ratings for years and brought in millions of dollars in ad revenue.

“But, if viewers continue preferring ‘Good Morning America” over the ‘Today’ show that revenue will decrease and cuts will have to be made.”

Matt just signed an extension with NBC to remain on the show. The insider went to say that it was signed “before the ratings started falling.”

Not only did the insider claim Matt Lauer could be fired from “Today” if ratings don’t go up, the source said execs have someone else in mind to replace him.

“The replacement is likely to be Willie Geist. He has been wildly popular with viewers and the crew since he was named co-host of the third hour of the show,” the source added.

In a Huffington Post report released, Alexandra Wallace shot down the report — stating it was completely false.

“There is absolutely no truth to this,” Wallace said. “There have been some recent outrageous claims regarding Matt and the ‘Today’ show, and an awful lot of piling on from nameless, faceless sources. These stories are wrong and irresponsible.”

Since Ann Curry was replaced by Savannah Guthrie on “Today,” Matt Lauer has been getting a bad rap. He’s reportedly unpopular among the staff of the morning news show. He makes $25 million a year by NBC. “Today” has dipped in ratings, but it doesn’t look like Lauer is going anywhere anytime soon!

    I would not be sad if Matt Lauer was no longer on the today show Ever since Meredith Viera left the show has not been the same. I am one of the viewers that are now loyal to Good Morning America.

    NBC/Today making fools of themselves, as well as making Lauer
    a puppet, big time! And they continue to ignore the viewers;
    while the same-o saga of tanking ratings continue! W/O the
    viewers they are “0″, nothing! They’re all their own worse enemies!
    Give it up NBC/Today/Lauer! Unrighteous pride! Karma continues!
    ‘Tis the season of naughty, & not nice, for you! The viewers &
    GMA DO get it!
