An insider said this to RadarOnline:
“News executive Alexandra Wallace has told NBC bosses she will have to replace Matt if the ratings continue to tank. The ‘Today’ show has always been considered a cash cow for the network. It dominated the morning news ratings for years and brought in millions of dollars in ad revenue.
“But, if viewers continue preferring ‘Good Morning America” over the ‘Today’ show that revenue will decrease and cuts will have to be made.”
Matt just signed an extension with NBC to remain on the show. The insider went to say that it was signed “before the ratings started falling.”
Not only did the insider claim Matt Lauer could be fired from “Today” if ratings don’t go up, the source said execs have someone else in mind to replace him.
“The replacement is likely to be Willie Geist. He has been wildly popular with viewers and the crew since he was named co-host of the third hour of the show,” the source added.
In a Huffington Post report released, Alexandra Wallace shot down the report — stating it was completely false.
“There is absolutely no truth to this,” Wallace said. “There have been some recent outrageous claims regarding Matt and the ‘Today’ show, and an awful lot of piling on from nameless, faceless sources. These stories are wrong and irresponsible.”
Since Ann Curry was replaced by Savannah Guthrie on “Today,” Matt Lauer has been getting a bad rap. He’s reportedly unpopular among the staff of the morning news show. He makes $25 million a year by NBC. “Today” has dipped in ratings, but it doesn’t look like Lauer is going anywhere anytime soon!
