We open with a dramatic review of last week’s elimination. Of course, they highlight all of the drama. It’s the semi-finals – they want the ratings! The final four get to sing and only three will move on to next week. They pick one song and the audience has picked their second song. Hopefully they each get a great one!
The judges come out and Nicole looks nervous. There’s isn’t booing when her name is announced though. Interesting. I guess all is forgiven after last week’s debacle elimination.
Marcus comes out to sing first. Can he keep going, after escaping three eliminations? He sings the boy band “I’ll Make Love to You” – picked by the fans – and it seems the girls in the audience are impressed. Simon looks confused by what is going on. Maybe because of the choir or the background dancers? Paula and Nicole praise him. Simon criticizes the rose and the zombie dancers. He gives it to LA and LA fires right back and says he has no taste. LA still stands by him.
Chris gets on stage to sing the song picked by the fans, which is “I Just Want to Fly”. He makes it his own and has Nicole and Paula up dancing. Will Simon critique the background action too? Nicole says he likes to entertain. Paula says his heart resonates with the world. Simon says it was a good performance, but not a great vocal. LA tells him to keep doing what he is doing.
Melanie hits the stage singing “Hero”. She nailed it. If she doesn’t win, I will be shocked. Her vocals are always on and her background isn’t full of dancers or confusing. Simon will be pleased, but will the other judges nail her, just because of who her mentor is? LA says it was really, really good, even though it was predictable – chosen by the fans. Nicole loved the song choice. Paula says her voice is impeccable. Simon rips on LA and says it isn’t a karaoke version.
Josh comes on the stage and he already seems like a star. Paula and Nicole were up and dancing. LA says he actually enjoyed it and Josh made a return, proving he could win it. Paula says he attacks souls and his vocals are brilliant. Simon agrees with LA and says he has come back strong. Nicole says he isn’t rehearsed, he is just great.
Now it is time to hear their chosen songs. Marcus sings Wham!…? Lots of dancers and a production – Simon isn’t going to like it. But Marcus did make the version of Careless Whisper his. Paula liked it, Nicole liked it and Simon says it was horrific. Simon thought the background dancers were circus like and LA missed it on this one. LA said he was a fighter and it was great.
Chris comes out and is under pressure to nail the song this time. If not, I think it will be between him and Marcus for the next exit. Chris is playing the piano for the first time – at the show and in front of a live audience. He starts out and it looks great. He sings great. But will it be enough to impress the judges from another harsh critique? Nicole says she is keeping it real. He doesn’t have the best vocals, but his spirit comes through and that is why people love him. Paula says she loves him and his story is inspirational. Simon says he needed to deliver and he did in a big way. It has moved Chris to tears. LA says he is so proud of him. Stardom isn’t about singability, it’s about lovability and he sure has it.
Melanie gets her chance to wow the audience – as if she hasn’t always. She sings a soul/jazz type song that is a risk for her. But it only shows how great her range is. She gets all four judges to stand. LA says she has everything needed to win and she killed it. Nicole says it was awesome. Paula says Bravo! Well done. Simon simply says it is why we brought it to America. And he thinks it was the performance of the season so far.
Last up for the night – Josh. Can he step it up, more so than Chris and Melanie did? He sits at the piano and performs as well. No dancers and distractions, so they should all love it. Just Josh’s voice, which seems to have captured everyone in the audience, including Nicole. Paula is brought to tears. LA said it lacked excitement, even though it was a great song. Paula is crying and asks LA how he could even say that? She says he is the one to beat. Simon says he has to be honest and agree with…Paula. He thinks it was sincere and with emotion. Nicole thanks them for realizing the simple truth that Josh is a gift.
Now, it’s time to vote. Tomorrow, it is down to three. Then we find out the winner next week!
