The Voice Recap: Second Battle Round

Last night saw the second battle round of “The Voice” and four more contestants were eliminated.

In the first battle round last week, celebrity mentors Christina Aguilera, Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green and Adam Levine began the difficult job of eliminating people from their own teams after they performed duets.

We already lost Tarralyn Ramsey (Team Christina), Tyler Robinson (Team Blake), Tim Mahoney (Team Adam) and Niki Dawson (Team Cee Lo). That means that each mentor now has seven contestants left in the game and competing to appear in the live finals, and ultimately hoping to win a recording contract with Universal Republic.

So how did last night’s battles go?

Team Cee Lo: Nakia vs. Tje Austin

Blues singer Nakia started the show stressing out that Ne-Yo’s “Closer” was perfect for Tje’s soulful voice. In return, Tje was worried that Nakia’s big voice would be better suited to the R&B track Cee Lo chose. But Adam thought they were both fantastic, but if he was forced to choose, he’d keep Nakia. Blake agreed, saying that he wanted Nakia for his team during the blind auditions and he still supports him. Christina also chose Nakia, despite loving Tje’s voice and “whole package.” Only Monica disagreed, saying that most artists would die for Tje’s melodic Cee Lo made the final decision to keep Nakia.

Team Blake: Elenowen (Josh & Nicole) vs. Jared Blake

Newlyweds Josh and Nicole battled against father-of-six Jared Blake, who has worked with artists including Big and Rich and the Goo Goo Dolls. It seemed a pretty uneven battle and the song “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough” suddenly seemed rather appropriate. Christina, Cee Lo and Adam agree they were both great. Blake’s advisor Reba McEntire didn’t think Elenowen looked as comfortable on stage as Jared did, and the song was a bit low for Nicole in her verse. In the end, Blake sent Elenowen home. He said he was “completely shocked at the way Jared brought it here today.”

Team Adam: Javier Colon vs. Angela Wolff

Father-of-two Javier Colon, who made all four mentors turn around in his blind audition, battled Angela Wolff, who was given a second chance after originally being rejected during the auditions. Another uneven match. Blake thought Javier blew Angela out of the water. Christina was equally impressed with Javier, liking his “swagger.” Cee Lo agreed, and so it was a no-brainer that Adam chose Javier.

Team Christina: Beverly McClellan vs. Justin Grennan

Christina chose “Baba O’Riley” by The Who for the battle between Justin, the only boy on her team, and rocker Beverly. Cee Lo thought Beverly “”stole it, owned it and then you sold it.” Adam called Beverly’s performance “awesome”, although she didn’t “murderize” Justin in the performance like he expected. But he was happy that didn’t happen, telling Justin that he “killed it.” Christina said that Justin is the contestant she’s most proud of because of his growth but, she decided to keep Beverly in the competition.

So did your favorite survive? What do you think of this week’s eliminations?
