There were so many special moments at the Royal Wedding of Prince William to Catherine Middleton. Everything seemed to go according to plan and all the young bridesmaids and page boys behaved beautifully. But we just had to bring you some of the little slip-ups and light-hearted incidents that made this very Royal occasion also feel like we were all invited to a family occasion too.
In a sense, of course, we were. But previous Royal Weddings before this one have always seemed much more austere. Perhaps it is the advances in technology, perhaps it is a real commitment of the Royal Family to modernize themselves and make themselves accessible to their subjects. Whatever it is, I love it because it meant we caught some priceless moments on the day.
The cameras were close enough to show us the intimate little moments we would have missed before. We saw Prince William momentarily struggle to get the wedding ring on his bride’s finger – just one of the times when the couple gave cute little smiles and giggles.
Just before the wedding ceremony commenced, Prince William joked to his new father-in-law, Michael Middleton: “We were supposed to have just a small family affair.” Of course, Prince William knew he had no chance of that!
William’s cousin, Zara Phillips, and her fiancé Mike Tindall got the giggles about something as the newly married couple and their witnesses went out to sign the registers.
After the wedding, Prince Philip almost tipped his coach over onto himself and the Queen because he put his foot on the wrong step to climb in.
I wish I was better at lip-reading as I would love to have known what Prince Harry said to Prince William when the best man turned to see Catherine Middleton coming up the aisle towards them. Whatever he said he made his brother smile so perhaps it was along the lines of “You’ve done all right there, bro – she’s a looker!”
We do know, because we saw it live on TV, that after raising the veil on Catherine Middleton, Prince William told her, “You look beautiful.”
Indeed she did! And with a loving, affectionate husband like Prince William by her side, we wish them both well for the future.
