Guests at the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards on Sunday were evacuated due to a security scare just hours before the awards ceremony began. But then guests were allowed to return to see The Help and The Artist scoop the lion’s share of the awards.
The building was closed for 15 minutes while sniffer dogs patrolled the area and guests were eventually allowed back in after undergoing rigorous security checks and metal detector tests.
Then the 2012 SAG winners were announced. The Help was the big winner of the night, with Viola Davis and Octavia Spencer taking the top female acting honors. Octavia was clearly overcome and wept with tears of joy as she accepted her award. Earlier in the evening Viola also wept when accepting her award. She even managed to joke that she needed to work out more in order to lift the heavy trophy.
The Artist also did well at the 2012 SAGs; Jean Dujardin beat Brad Pitt and George Clooney to take best actor award. The Help also won the award for the best ensemble cast.
True to his role as a silent star in The Artist, Jean Dujardin didn’t know what to say when he took to the podium. But he was thankful for the opportunity to follow his childhood dream.
Betty White seemed perplexed when she was announced as the winner for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Comedy Series. It’s not the first time the Golden Girl has won a SAG Award for her work in the TV series Hot in Cleveland. She topped the same category last year.
But she said,
“I think they made a terrible mistake.”
She quipped that her award also belonged to her co-stars Valerie Bertinelli, Jane Leeves and Wendie Malick, but “I’m not going to let them keep this but I’ll let them see it.”
Alec Baldwin was another previous winner who won his category yet again.
The 53-year-old was given the statute for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy series for the sixth year in a row for his work in 30 Rock, causing the usually articulate star to scream “Oh my God” several times like an overexcited teen.
