We’ve already told you this season’s line-up so we don’t need to go through all that again but obviously the first part of the show was taken up with introducing the teams which include married clowns, fitness guidos and Big Brother winners.
Nobody comes between me and my $1 million!” said Rachel, the Big Brother winner, so expect her and Brendan to be uber competitive.
With the intros out of the way it was time to find out their first challenge.
The first-leg winners will again get the express pass to use before the end of the eighth leg, so it is important.
Their first clue was somewhere in 100 red and yellow balloons suspended above the countryside. Only 11 of the balloons had a clue inside them.
The lucky teams found out they would be flying to Santa Barbara, Argentina, but only the first six teams to arrive at LAX would get on the early connecting flight from Buenos Aires.
Brendon and Rachel were first (I told you she was competitive) followed by Nary and Jamie, Andrew and Elliot, Art and JJ, Rachel and Dave and Vanessa and Ralph. They all got a two-and-a-half hour lead on the other teams when they arrive in Argentina.
The first task in Santa Barbara was a roadblock which required one team member to skydive 10,000ft from a plane while the other tried to pinpoint the location where they would land. They got the next clue only upon being reunited.
Some of the Amazing Race competitors seemed to have got the game confused with Survivor. Rachel and Dave and Art and JJ formed an alliance on the basis that both teams have government employees and Dave shares a “similar alpha male persona” to the border patrol agents. Poor JJ didn’t seem too happy about “playing with death,” otherwise known as skydiving, but mostly the dives go off without a hitch.
But I think Vanessa best described the fear before jumping:
“My uterus is in my throat!” she said.
Actually, the drivers down on the ground were having more trouble.
Danny still struggled with the stick shift, even though his mom told him to practice before he left for the race and Maiya drove off the road into a sand dune and got stuck waiting for help.
While people are learning to drive, the earlier teams – Rachel & Dave, Brendon & Rachel, Art & JJ, Nary & Stacy – have gotten stuck into their next task, which is making 120 empanadas – half filled with meat, half with cheese. Aside from the quantity, the difficult part seemed to be getting the dough patterns right.
Rachel and Dave finished first and got an express pass, with Brendon and Rachel close behind.
All these early starters had finished when the skydiving teams got there. So the others start making empanadas to bag one of the four remaining spots.
In the end, it came down to the Jersey Shore boys Joey and Danny battling against California sisters Misa and Maiya for the final spot.
This is where things got even more bizarre than Maiya driving into the mud. The girls got their empanadas passed first but then they had to collect their bags and check in. The girls got their bags first. Still good.
But wait, where is Phil to take their check-in? Actually he was a few feet away from them but they didn’t see him! Their heads got totally messed up. They left the garden and began running around like idiots, allowing Joey and Danny enough time to finish their empanada and check in.
Of course, in eliminating Misa and Maiya, Phil had to point out that they made the worst check in ever and that they were “this close” to getting through. Yeah, why not rub salt in their wounds!
So, the leg 1 check-in order was:
1. Rachel & Dave
2. Brendon & Rachel
3. Art & JJ
4. Nary & Jamie
5. Vanessa & Ralph
6. Elliot & Andrew
7. Kerri & Stacy
8. Dave & Cherie
9. Bopper & Mark
10. Joey & Danny
11. Misa & Maiya – eliminated
