There are just ten players left in the game now. They were treated to a surprise visit from their loved ones, in a “Survivor” first. The 110 degree heat for the Immunity Challenge proved too much for Andrea and Boston Rob proved his superiority in the “Survivor” stakes.
Here’s how it all panned out.
First, I loved the blatant product placement. A Sprint smart phone left at tree mail delivered messages from loved ones to the castaways at both the Murlonio camp and Redemption Island. There were many tears but for the first time in “Survivor” history (probably in reality TV history) this didn’t make me cry.
The lack of emotional pull continued through the duel at Redemption Island. It was a pretty straightforward “challenge” (I use the word loosely here!) to break a series of tiles by tossing a heavy ball on the course. Anyone who has watched their child toss a bean bag gets the total lack of suspense that was in the air.
Mike won that challenge. Steve limped home in last place and was permanently eliminated from the game.
That was when things got interesting! Host Jeff Probst brought out everybody’s family member. Mike had won the opportunity to spend the afternoon with his own mother since he came in first place during the duel. However, he was given the option to sacrifice his family visit to allow his mates on Redemption Island (Matt and Ralph) to spend time with their loved ones. Or, he could allow the remaining six members of the Murlonio tribe to spend time with their visitors from home.
What did he choose? Apparently he didn’t and God chose it for him. But Mike gave up the time with his mother so the Murlonio tribe, who were the original Ometepe six responsible for destroying Zapatera, could have the time with their loved ones.
Wow! I was as shocked as Jeff Probst. But then again, it was a strategically sound decision. If he gets back in the game, he needs everyone he can get on his side. And with only 8 days to go he needed to start making friends. It’s also not a long time to wait to see his mom.
My personal favorite loved one visit was Boston Rob with his sister. He went through his entire strategic plan to her and got a shirt with Amber and his daughter on it that says, “Love you Dada.” Awwwwww!
The Immunity Challenge was amusing to watch. The final six had to use a series of puzzle pieces to complete the tall staircase. The first competitor to complete the staircase and climb to the top would win Immunity. Boston Rob was clearly struggling but he kept going to beat everybody else to the top in 110 degree heat. He looked like a true winner at that point!
Back at camp, the Murlonio tribe began figuring out a plan on who to vote off next. There are no more easy passes of targeting their enemies from Zapatera. Now they must face each other. It was Boston Rob’s plan take out Andrea, his biggest threat. It worked and Andrea was sent to join her former love interest, Matt, Redemption Island.
