As the two-hour finale of “So You Think You Can Dance” for season 8 began, the title could have gone to any one of Melanie, Tadd, Marko, and Sasha. Any of them could have won the $250,000 and the life-changing opportunity that comes with being crowned America’s Favorite Dancer.
But judge Nigel Lythgoe had stuck his neck out after the first part of the season finale and said that the girls out-danced the boys. Would the voting pubic agree?
The final installment of this year’s “So You Think You Can Dance” finale began with a Sonya Tayeh-choreographed performance to “Wanna Get Hype” by District 78 and featuring all top 20 dancers from season 8.
Cat Deely looked yummy as ever, wearing long hair and a classy, yet shiny red dress, as everyone watched a montage video of the season so far and we realized how far everyone had come.
But before we could find out who had made it further than anyone else, to be crowned champion, we took a wander down memory lane with some classic encores chosen by the various judges.
Mary Murphy’s choice of Sasha and Kent’s poignant contemporary dance by Tyce DiOrio using a special wall as a metaphor for their relationship was first. Melanie and Marko took a look back at their only “So You Think You Can Dance” hip hop routine of best friends falling in love. Then we had Tadd and Lauren’s jazz routine from Wednesday night, danced to Queen’s “Another One Bites The Dust.” Respect to Mandy Moore for that choreography.
Robert and Miranda’s NappyTabs woodpecker hip hop number was chosen by Lil C as a favorite before host Cat Deeley picked the top 8’s performance that took place at a wonderfully staged circus.
Then (squeal of excitement as the guy is actually from my family’s home town), the winner of the UK’s “So You Think You Can Dance,” Matt Flint, joined Jess and Nick for a seriously cool tap number.
Then, Melanie and Neil revisited their “Total Eclipse of the Heart” contemporary dance, complete with Melanie’s crazy leap into Neil’s arms. Is that what won the finale for her?
Then, we get to the unpleasant business of eliminating fantastic finalists. Tadd was first to go, right after we saw Marko and Allison’s contemporary piece by Sonya Teyeh, danced to “I Know It’s Over.” Harsh!
Then we were taken through a series of other favorite dancers which were, for me, starting to detract from the main business of the evening: to crow a “So You Think You Can Dance” winner. And yes, Melanie and Marko’s statue routine choreographed by Travis Wall was in there.
Give me some results, already! Oh, wait. Marko was eliminated next. The public agreed with Nigel Lythgoe: the girls were better.
So Sasha and Melanie were the last dancers standing. They encore their Sonya Tayeh jazz routine and are applauded as energetically as they danced.
Finally, it’s time to announce the “So You Think You Can Dance” winner. 11 million votes have been cast and most of them went to – Melanie Moore! The amazing dancer from Georgia, Melanie Moore, won “So You Think You Can Dance 2011” and was officially named America’s Favorite Dancer.
