It’s not often you hear Simon Cowell admit he was wrong. But that’s exactly what he thinks he was, over the firing of British pop star Cheryl Cole from the “X Factor USA” judging panel. Nicole Scherzinger has also opened up about what really happened!
There was a lot of drama surrounding who would feature on the judging panel of “The X Factor USA”, which is soon to be seen on FOX. It premiers September 21. But Simon Cowell is now taking full responsibility for Cheryl Cole’s firing.
Cole is a hugely popular singer and “X Factor” judge in the U.K. She was initially in the line-up for the American version of the singing contest. She was fired May 23 and replaced by Nicole Scherzinger, who had been tipped to be a co-presenter of the show. Brit Steve Jones will now be the solo host.
Cowell had said Cheryl Cole “was sensational” in her UK judging role. But over in the US, things went “horribly wrong” as Simon Cowell put it, and Cheryl Cole was not given much of a chance to correct anything.
“We shot a couple of days, and I just had a feeling – and I was probably wrong – I thought she would be more comfortable on the U.K. show,” said Cowell.
He states that Cole initially agreed with him and accepted an invitation to return to her “X Factor” UK judging role. He says it was only after they went public with that decision that things went wrong in negotiations.
In “The X Factor USA” Simon Cowell is reunited with former “American Idol” judge Paula Abdul. L.A. Reid and Nicole Scherzinger join them on the panel.
It is Scherzinger who is most willing to talk about replacing Cheryl Cole. She has denied rumors that the problems were Cole’s home sickness. She said Simon Cowell was more concerned with the panel’s chemistry. His bond with Cheryl had been great in the U.K. but she failed to hit it off with US judges, particularly Paula Abdul.
So, Cheryl Cole was offered a job back on “The X Factor” in the UK but she refused it. She is rumored to be lined up for a mentoring role on a new UK version of “The Voice.”
“I am sorry for the way it worked out as we were incredibly close. She is still grumpy with me.” In fact, the two have hardly spoken since Cheryl Cole’s “X Factor” firing.
“The X Factor USA” premieres on FOX September 21.
