Selena Gomez Hospitalization: I Was Very Malnourished, Mom Makes Her Slow Down

On Thursday, June 9, Gomez, 18, was rushed to the hospital suffering from nausea and a severe headache after taping her appearance on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno. Her supportive fans managed to make #getwellselena a trending topic on Twitter. By Monday, June 13, Gomez back on stage on the Santa Monica Place show she had to cancel on Friday due to her hospitalization.

The 18-year-old performed live and answered questions about her new movie Monte Carlo at Santa Monica Place Mall.

Selena Gomez sang her two hit songs “Who Says?” and “A Year Without Rain” before going to a Q&A session with fans.

“I want to thank you so much for coming,” Gomez said to the crowd of more than 500 people. “If you guys came on Friday, I’m so sorry that I couldn’t be here. I love you guys very much.”

She also attempted to end speculation about the cause of her hospitalization, telling reporters, “I was just very malnourished. I was low on iron and exhausted.” That sounds more like anemia than the rather dramatic diagnosis of malnourishment, but you heard it from Selena first. She said she is “feeling much better, thank you all for being so understanding.”

Selena’s performance was as enthusiastic as ever. She wore a sheer white embroidered blouse and a pair of mini-shorts accessorised with black and tan strappy stilettos and Tiffany jewellery.

The performnce was thankfully in sharp contrast to photos of Selena in hospital in Burbank, California,  where a frail looking Selena was seen dressed in grey tracksuit bottoms and a yellow and white striped vest. She was clutching a jumper and the hospital bands could be seen on her wrists.

The “Wizards of Waverly Place” star was rushed to hospital on Thursday night but she had been “nothing but professional” during her appearance on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno.

“She did a backstage interview and hung out with Jim Carrey after the show. The Tonight Show people didn’t even know she wasn’t feeling well,” a backstage source said.

Rumors that the star was pregnant, started by TMZ, have now been confirmed as untrue. It has also been corrected that Selena’s boyfriend, Justin Bieber, remained unconcerned through her illness.

In fact, Bieber missed an ice hockey game he had tickets foron Friday night after hearing Selena was ill. The Canadian singer didn’t show up to the game after reserving a block of seats at Vancouver’s Rogers Arena to watch the Stanley Cup finals Friday night.

Justin Bieber has also passed the suitable boyfriend test with Selena’s mother, Mandy Teefey. Mandy is now determined to make sure that her daughter makes a full recovery and slows down.

“Her schedule is insane,” a source close to Selena said. “She is one of the hardest working people in show business but now even Selena knows she needs to slow down. You have no idea how much work goes into promoting a record or a film.”

She is currently promoting her new film, “Monte Carlo” as well as her hot new single. But it seems that Mom is the one to get Selena to take care of herself.

“Selena’s mom is amazing. She doesn’t want to be in the spotlight herself like so many other celebrity parents. Instead she just wants to make sure that her daughter remains normal while living such an extraordinary life,” a friend stated.

That may be exactly what Selena Gomez needs right now. Take care of yourself, Selena!
