Sergeant Dustin L Williams asked the “Iron Man 2” actress to accompany him to the Marine Corps Ball in November via a YouTube video earlier this week. He said that he would be “honored” if she would accompany him to the formal.
However, Scarlett Johansson has since refused Williams invitation because of “previous commitments.” However, she did send the sergeant a bottle of champagne as a gesture of good will toward US troops.
“Not only does Sgt. Williams deserve recognition for his bravery, selflessness and dedication to the United States and its people, but he also displays a cheeky talent for film making,” Johansson said of the YouTube invitation.
She tried to let the guy down gently. Once upon a time regular guys asking out celebrities would expect a knockback, but with so many stars now lined up as dates for the Marine Corps Ball, there must have been a certain amount of expectation there.
“Sgt Williams, unfortunately due to prior commitments I will not be able to attend the Ball with you this year but I am sending you a case of Moet and Chandon with gratitude. In my absence, I raise a glass to you and all the men and women of the US Marine Corps, past and present, in thanks for your continued commitment to preserving the safety of our nation.”
Johansson is just the latest in a string of celebrities to receive invitations to the Marine Corps Ball. Mila Kunis and her “Friends with Benefits” co-star and rumored real-life partner, Justin Timberlake, whose invitation came just days after Kunis’, will both attend the event as dates of service men and women.
