Russell Brand issued a statement on Friday announcing he and Katy Perry have ended their marriage of 14 months. The announcement comes after rumours of problems have been circulating for the last couple of months.
The divorce is thought to be by mutual agreement but Brand is the one who filed for divorce, because Katy was worried about upsetting her religious parents. They are Evangelical Christians who raised Katy to believe that divorce is wrong.
Russell filed for divorce on the grounds of “irreconcilable differences.”
He released a statement saying,
“Sadly, Katy and I are ending our marriage. I’ll always adore her and I know we’ll remain friends.”
Both Russell and Katy had publicly denied divorce rumours as recently as in the last month. However, now their marriage is over.
During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres, Russell insisted he was “happily married. I’’m married to Katy. Perpetually, until death do us part was the pledge.”
And then Katy took to Twitter to issue her own denial.
“First I’m pregnant & then I’m divorced. What am I All My Children?”
The couple even got new tattoos together at the beginning of December. But now it seems all these PDAs were either in vain or in a desperate attempt to cover up the truth that they already knew: that their marriage was failing.
The rumour mill went into overdrive when they were 7,000 miles apart at Christmas. Despite planning to spend the festive season all together with their families in London, Katy was spotted with friends in Hawaii and Russell was in Cornwall with David Baddiel. Neither Katty nor Russell was wearing a wedding ring.
Brand filed the divorce documents on Friday in Los Angeles County, and cites irreconcilable differences as the reason for the split. It is thought that they decided to divorce a few weeks ago but waited to announce their split until both of them were out of town and out of the spotlight.
The couple was married in India in the summer of 2010. They have no children.
Rumors of marital strife had plagued the former couple for several months. Now the Russell Brand and Katy Perry announced their divorce two years to the day since Russell proposed to Katy in India on New Year’s Eve 2009.
