Robert DeNiro criticized Donald Trump on Saturday night for expressing his doubts about where President Obama was born. He chose to launch his attack on Trump live in an on-stage interview by NBC news anchor Brian Williams as part of the Tribeca Film Festival.
Cinema talk soon turned to politics and DeNiro, a fierce supporter of Barack Obama, let his feelings be known about potential Presidential candidate Trump. Donald Trump is a very vocal mouthpiece of the “birthers,” who suspect that Barack Obama was not born on United States soil and so had no right to stand for elections, let alone become President.
“I won’t name names, but certain people in the news in the last couple of weeks, just, what are they doing? It’s crazy.”
When Williams asked if he was talking about anyone in particular, like someone with a show on his own network on Sunday nights (“Celebrity Apprentice”) DeNiro didn’t pass up the opportunity to admit he referring to Donald Trump.
Trump’s popularity with conservative Republicans has risen sharply through his unsubstantiated claims that Obama wasn’t born in the U.S. He insists that the signed Certificate of Live Birth, with its individual serial number, and the two birth announcements a Honolulu newspaper ran just days after the President was born there, are not proof.
DeNiro is incensed by this. “Go get the facts,” he challenged. “It’s like a big hustle. It’s like being a car salesman. How dare you!”
We are just dying to hear Trump’s reply to that! Birthers don’t necessarily deal with the fact that presumably, Obama was asked for proof of his citizenship a few times in his political career!
