Oscars 2012 Nominations Full List Announced! “The Artist” Takes Over

George Clooney, Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt and Octavia Spencer were among the performers receiving Oscar nominations, while The Artist, The Descendants and Hugo were some of the nominations for the 84th Academy Awards announced early Tuesday morning in Beverly Hills.

The Artist is a front-runner even though the black-and-white silent film about Hollywood’s transition to “talkies” has played to relatively small audiences and only made just over $12.1 million at the box office.

One of the closest awards races of the year will be in the best director category: the director of The Artist, Michel Hazanavicius, is pitted against academy favorite Martin Scorsese, who directed Hugo. Strangely, both pay homage to the early days of cinema.

Some surprise Oscar nominations are the 9/11 drama Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close, which had received mixed reviews, but it earned a best picture nomination, and in the best actor category, Demian Bichir earned a nomination for the little seen independent film A Better Life.

So the Oscar nominations are out. We may not know who will win, but we have a fair idea that the 84th Academy Awards ceremony will be a whole heap more entertaining than it was last year when James Franco and Anne Hathaway co-hosted. That’s because this year sees the return of Billy Crystal and his quick wit.
