The winners of the 2011 Academy Awards were hardly surprising. Industry insiders had correctly predicted most of the victors. The winners were from great movies but it seems a shame that that this past year has seen the release of so many great movies that would, in other years, win an Oscar, that some worthy people missed out.
British movie, “The King’s Speech” was the main winner this year, winning 4 Oscars. Colin Firth bagged the Best Actor award for his moving portrayal of reluctant British monarch, King George VI, battling to overcome a severe speech impediment with the help of an unorthodox voice coach. Tom Hooper achieved the Best Director for the movie so it became inevitable that “The King’s Speech” would be crowned Best Picture, and it was! It also got the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay.
The Best Actress award predictably went to Natalie Portman for her starring role in “Black Swan”.
“The Fighter” achieved gongs for both Best Supporting Actor (Christian Bale) and Best Supporting Actress (Melissa Leo). On a night of few surprises, Leo’s acceptance speech will likely grab most headlines as she became the first person to curse accepting an Academy Award.
“When I watched Kate (Winslet) three years ago it looked so f**king easy!” said Leo. You’d have thought Melissa would have known better! It’s not big and it’s not smart, sweety. A winner turned into a loser right there before our eyes.
“The Social Network also did well, picking up Oscars in the categories of: Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Editing and Best Original Score.
Inception also won 3 Oscars, for: Best Cinematography, Best Sound Mixing and Best Sound Editing.
So were your favorites honored? Could you think of more worthy Oscar winners this year? And what’s your view on Melissa Leo’s F-bomb?
