While most of America and the world were celebrating for Natalie Swan upon her Oscar for Best Actress, Mike Huckabee swam against the tide. He was too busy judging her for having a baby outside of marriage; And here we were thinking we’d entered the 21st century!
In her Oscar acceptance speech, Portman touchingly thanks her fiancé, Benjamin Millepied, for giving her “the most wonderful gift”: their baby who is due to be born later this year. That caused most of us to coo in delight, but it made Hackabee mad, as he disclosed to Michael Medved on his conservative radio show this week.
OK, Medved fed Huckabee the line, suggesting that a better gift would have been a wedding ring, but then Huckabee ran with it, taking the opportunity to slam not just Natalie Portman, but all single mothers.
Apparently is troubled that regular women will view Portman as pregnant and unmarried and think it’s OK for them. “But there aren’t really a lot of single moms out there who are making millions of dollars every year for being in a movie.”
Where do you start to take exception to this?
1. Most women and even young girls are not quite so empty-headed as to base their lives upon what they seen an internationally acclaimed actress doing.
2. Portman will hardly be raising this baby alone. She appears to be very much loved up with Millepied; she is engaged to be married to him and he will most likely be fully involved with his child’s life.
3. There are plenty of other women, single or married, leaving their children in the care of others while they work.
4. We could go on, but do we need to?
According to Huckabee, “Most single moms are very poor, uneducated, can’t get a job, and if it weren’t for government assistance, their kids would be starving to death and never have health care.”
Women and even teenage girls know that they won’t get a big movie role the moment they are impregnated. They know if they are struggling financially now, a baby won’t make the situation any better. But to condemn the thousands of women each year that either choose to get pregnant without a husband or who choose unexpected motherhood over a termination will be patronizing and offensive to many. That’s before Huckabee even started to put a racial spin on the whole topic!
Huckabee, staunch member of the religious right, may have been testing the waters ahead of his next Presidential run, but Hollywood is not likely to be impressed. Neither are many ordinary Americans. What did you think to his condemnation of Natalie Portman?
