Hollywood star Mel Gibson has spoken out for the first time since the domestic violence scandal involving Oksana Grigorieva, his girlfriend at the time and mother of his youngest child. He has suggested he may never act again and says rather glibly,
“I don’t care if I don’t act anymore. I could easily not act again. It’s not a problem.”
The comments were prompted by Gibson being fired from his role on “Hangover 2” when his co-stars and production staff refused to work with him. They shunned him after hearing of leaked tapes in which the “Lethal Weapon” actor was reportedly heard ranting, swearing and threatening his Russian former partner, Oksana, on the telephone last year.
Gibson called the leaking of the calls a “personal betrayal,” adding the tapes were “terribly humiliating and painful for my family.” Last month, he pleaded no contest to a charge of hitting Grigorieva, the mother of his baby daughter, in an argument in January 2010.
His punishment was three years probation, a year’s counselling and several hours of community service.
The tapes were leaked as Gibson was trying to make an acting comeback after making anti-Semitic remarks during a drink-driving arrest in 2006, and the end of his 28-year marriage to Robin, with whom he has several children.
Gibson hit back about the tapes, claiming they were edited and said they were not representative of his true feelings or how he usually behaves. However, his “Hangover 2” co-stars were unimpressed and refused to work with Gibson. Even his manager left him and his movie “The Beaver” suffered long delays. It is now set to be released in the US on May 6.
The star said he also has a “total bodice-ripping swashbuckling” comedy movie project in which he hoped to take a supporting role. He was adamant he was not “offended” when he was cut from the cast of “The Hangover” sequel. He just decided to “let that go” and “move on.”
Moving on for Mel Gibson seems to be a bit part in a comedy swashbuckling bodice-ripper but he seems unconcerned if it leads to anything else. Is that Braveheart bravado or has Mr. Gibson lost his taste for acting? Sure, he has already made his fortune in movies, but where is his passion!
