“Today’s” Matt is sick and tired of the sarcastic comments he keeps getting regarding his hefty $25 million salary. The morning news program’s anchor has supposedly told NBC it’s gotten a little ridiculous, TMZ reported. He’s said to be “freaked out” that so many people on the streets of Manhattan are calling him names and blaming him for Ann Curry’s firing. The site claims Lauer feels “abused” and that Curry’s termination from “Today” wasn’t his fault. As the news source first published, Lauer insisted if he renewed his contract, that he didn’t want Curry co-anchoring with him.
An NBC network source said, “It’s driving him crazy. He’s so unhappy.”
People are yelling things at Lauer like, “You’re a bad guy,” and “You got Ann fired. Does that make you happy?”.
Lauer’s ego could be a bit bruised if it’s true that he’s only secure on the show “by default.” He not only has a binding contract, but NBC executives are said to be “stuck” because they have no one who can come in and repair the damage.
There have been rumors that if Lauer is replaced on “Today,” that Willie Geist would take over. He currently hosts the 9 a.m. hour of the show. TMZ writes that “one very connected source” said Geist is “not ready. He’s not there yet.”
How doomed is Matt Lauer on “Today”? A lot of rumors and reports have speculated that he’s walking on thin ice hosting the morning news show and that Ann Curry’s departure from the show has backfired big time on him. Will he somehow make ratings on “Today” turn around or is he just that unpopular with viewers and staff?
