After 25 years of marriage, Maria Shriver has finally filed for divorce from Arnold Schwarzenegger, 6 weeks after he had fathered a love child with his housekeeper – a story which broke publicly almost 14 years after it actually happened.
The move to divorce Arnold Schwarzenegger has been initiated after the serial adulterer revealed he fathered a love child with his housekeeper of 20 years, Mildred Baena.
The divorce documents, however, cite irreconcilable differences. They don’t show whether the couple had a prenuptial agreement, but it is believed the high-profile pair does not have one. That means Maria will most likely receive half of Arnold’s wealth.
The pair got married in 1986 and Arnold and Maria have four children together. Their two sons, Patrick (17) and Christopher (13) are still minors. Shriver has petitioned for joint custody.
Schwarzenegger and Shriver first announced their separation in early May. A week later, the former California governor and one-time action movie star admitted to having fathered a child with a member of his household staff several years ago.
Now, of course, we know all about that.
The divorce filing signals an end to a fairytale marriage which began on a spring day in 1986 in Cape Cod and brought together a bodybuilder and rising action star and an heiress of the Kennedy clan.
They apparently entered marriage with no plans that it would end as there’s no indication of a premarital agreement. So, that means, under California law, that half of Schwarzenegger’s earnings from a career as a Hollywood megastar, which allowed him to work for free as governor and commute by private jet to Sacramento, will likely go to his estranged wife.
Maria Shriver is seeking spousal support and the divorce is expected to be handled mostly behind closed doors. However, economic disclosure forms filed in January show Schwarzenegger has interests in at least eight entities each worth $1 million or more. His total wealth is impossible to calculate.
Shriver’s holdings are more modest but are listed in the disclosure as being over $1m.
It could this be the most expensive celebrity divorce ever.
