Lil Wayne Free At Last

After serving 8 months of a jail term in Rikers Island jail for gun offences, Grammy award winning rapper Lil Wayne has been freed.

His ecstatic manager, Cortex Bryant tweeted “Free at last!” But really Lil Wayne could have found himself in jail a lot longer. He served just 8 months of a year long sentence, gaining an early release for good behavior, despite spending the last month of his time in jail in solitary confinement after a disciplinary offence. Does anyone else here think that’s not exactly ‘good behaviour’, then?

Lil Wayne was jailed for keeping a loaded semi-automatic .40-caliber gun on his tour bus in 2007. He pleaded guilty and was jailed in October 2009. Now, he’s headed back home to Miami, ready for a welcome home celebration this Sunday.

Meanwhile, his career hasn’t missed a beat while he as in jail. It may be 2 years since he won a Grammy but his latest album, ‘I Am Not a Human Being’ was No. 1 in last month’s Billboard 200 chart. That’s quite something since he was locked up in solitary at the time.

He has presidential support, too. President Obama admits to having some of Lil Wayne’s hits on his iPod and Bill Clinton expressed his liking for the rapper’s music and said “what I hope will happen is that he has a good life now”. I guess we all do. The man is far too talented to be wasting his life in jail and who needs more gun crime?
