Lara Logan Speaks Exclusively to New York Times and 60 Minutes about Egypt Assault

CBS correspondent Lara Logan has given what she says are her only interviews about her recent sex attack in Tahrir Square to “60 Minutes” and the “New York Times.”

Logan was attacked in Cairo’s Tahrir Square on February 11, the day that President Hosni Mubarak was finally driven from power by a popular uprising. At the time, CBS called it “a brutal and sustained sexual assault and beating before being saved by a group of women and an estimated 20 Egyptian soldiers.”

Some details of Ms. Logan’s interviews with “60 Minutes” and the “New York Times” were released yesterday.

She reported how at the time of the attack, she thought,

“Not only am I going to die here, but it’s going to be just a torturous death that’s going to go on forever and ever and ever.”

Logan reported that 200 to 300 men attacked her for over 40 minutes. “They raped me with their hands,” she said. “My clothes were torn to pieces…what really struck me was how merciless they were. They really enjoyed my pain and suffering. It incited them to more violence.”

Lara decided to speak out so the attack “didn’t leave me to carry the burden alone, like my dirty little secret, something that I had to be ashamed of.” Guilt and shame are common emotions for victims of sexual assault.

The full interview with Logan will air on “60 Minutes” on Sunday May 1. She told the Times that there will be no further interviews about the attack.
