Brumfield (32), who is married to husband Stuart, had been facing charges of first degree murder and aggravated child abuse charges in connection with the 2008 death of her best friend’s daughter, 1-year-old Olivia Madison Garcia. If found guilty, she could have faced the death penalty.
However, the Orange County State Attorney’s Office in Florida announced that she was found not guilty of murder.
Brumfield originally claimed that the girl fell and hit her head while trying to climb out of a playpen. But prosecutors maintained that it was impossible that a fall from such a height would cause the three and a half inch fracture which was found on the little girl’s skull.
In a horrible coincidence, the trial took place in the same courthouse where Casey Anthony is now on trial for the death of her two-year-old daughter Caylee.
Billy Bob Thornton (55) has been married five times and has four children by three different women. “The Monster’s Ball” star was infamously married to Angelina Jolie for three years. He currently lives with his partner Connie Angland. He has been estranged from Amanda for some time.
One of her neighbors said after the trial verdict, “She seemed like a quiet and normal person. I used to see her playing with two young boys in their yard but I’m not sure if they were her sons or not. I believe her husband still lives in the house but nobody has seen her for quite a while. I did not know Billy Bob Thornton was her father.”
During her trial at Orange County Courthouse the court heard that Brumfield waited more than two hours after her husband returned from work to call 911. Her story was that she was baby-sitting Olivia in her Ocoee home when the child lost her balance and fell about two feet out of her playpen.
But instead of getting medical help immediately as you might expect, she painted the toddler’s toenails and fed her bananas. When paramedics arrived they found little Olivia’s body limp and cold to the touch.
Brumfield had been her godmother and the child’s mother, Heather Murphy, was such a close friend that she even had her own key to Brumfield’s home.
The Orange County Medical Examiner Dr. Jane Garavaglia, the same person who performed Caylee Anthony’s autopsy, testified that the death of Olivia Garcia was intentional. Olivia suffered so much head trauma that she would have been unconscious within minutes and dead within an hour. She died from a skull fracture and bleeding of the brain early October 4, 2008.
Brumfield was watching Olivia and her elder sister overnight because Murphy had to work an early shift the following day.
Brumfield sent two text messages to Murphy about the girls after Olivia’s fall, which now seems incredibly sick. She told the mother Olivia had learned to climb out of her playpen but had yet to perfect the landing. She also asked for the girls to stay the following night. Olivia was already fatally injured or even dead. It his her failure to get immediate medical help which led to the guilty verdict on aggravated manslaughter.
During sentencing Brumfield was acquitted of first-degree murder and aggravated child abuse charges. She will be formally sentenced for the conviction of aggravated manslaughter in July.
