The cast of hit TV show ‘Glee’ have this week reached the dizzy heights of number three in the Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart. That makes them the highest selling band of all time in the Billboard charts. Not bad for a bunch high school misfits, is it? But it’s set to get better!
The Glee cast debut six singles in the chart this week, all featuring in the Fox TV channel program about a high school Glee Club. That takes their total of Hot 100 singles appearances to 75, four ahead of the 71 achieved by UK 1960s legends The Beatles.
The Glee cast have a way to go before reaching Elvis Presley’s 108 Hot 100 singles, though, but who knows – if this TV series’ meteoric rise continues, anything is possible. They are already third, just behind James Brown on 91.
Glee just received a further lift to its soundtrack sales with Britney Spears’ music featuring on the show this week. That took them past the Beatles in terms of soundtracks sales. They have already sold 2.8 million albums and 11.5 million downloads and with Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’ achieving 109,000 downloads within its first week, it seems likely that this is yet another Glee song destined for the Billboard 100.
So what is the Glee effect? Why are its cover versions so popular? Is it just nostalgia for the old pop classics or does Glee bring something new and fresh to the old songs? Is it, in fact, nothing to do with the music but more the show’s feel-good factor itself? You drop us a line and let us know.
