Eddie Murphy To Host the Oscars: Good Choice?

There is probably no-one left in the world who was impressed by James Franco and Anne Hathaway’s hosting of this year’s Oscars. So can the organizers make a worse decision on the celebrity they choose to award their next awards ceremony? Probably not. But perhaps they are going to do a whole lot better. There are strong rumors that Eddie Murphy is the front-runner for who is most likely to host the 84th Academy Awards next year.

At this year’s soiree, Anne Hathaway’s impersonation of the Energizer bunny on speed clashed horribly with James Franco’s style which was so laid back it was like he could hardly be bothered to turn up. To say it was awkward is probably one if the biggest understatements of the year.

Now, under the stewardship of Rush Hour director Brett Ratner, the 84th Academy Awards has a new host in its sights: Eddie Murphy. Ratner and Murphy worked together on the upcoming comedy Tower Heist and they have been planning Beverly Hills Cop 4 for quite a while, so the two of them should understand each other pretty well by now.

Eddie Murphy is apparently interested in hosting the 84th Academy Awards and he is a strong enough character with enough comic banter to enable him to go solo on the hosting gig. That will eliminate the uncomfortable jarring together that we had between Hathaway and Franco. That is what made both of them look worse than they really were.

But is Eddie Murphy a good choice for the Oscars hosting job?

Dreamgirls won Murphy an Oscar nomination in 2007, but apart from that his recent movie track record has been rather mediocre. However, anyone who has seen his stand-up shows Raw and Delirious, and his Saturday Night Live stint prove that the 50-year-old still knows how to entertain a crowd.

The edginess of Murphy’s solo routines may worry the Academy’s more senior members, but remember that he has been part of the Hollywood establishment for nearly three decades now so he may be a safer pair of hands than you’d think for the Oscars. And don’t forget, although some of his latest movies may have been somewhat ordinary, when he’s let loose Eddie Murphy can be hilarious.
