Dancing with the Stars 2011 celebrity contestant J.R. Martinez appears on Dr. Drew on Tuesday. In a candid interview he reveals why he feels he survived the horrific incident that left him permanently scarred.
“I think we all go through something we ask the question why. Why me, why me, why me? And I was going through that question every single day of my recovery for the first five months,” J.R. told Dr. Drew in an interview for Dr. Drew’s Lifechangers.
But his life suddenly regained some purpose and he saw how he could be of service to others again when a nurse asked him to talk to another burns survivor who was struggling to come to terms with his injuries.
Iraq war veteran J.R. Martinez was injured when the Humvee he was driving hit a land mine while he was deployed with the Army in 2003.
“I was really scared and intimidated to go into his room and when I walked into his room it was completely dark and I thought to myself, ‘Oh my God, he’s in a bad place.’”
But Martinez stayed and talked to the man for 40 minutes. Looking back as he left the room, he saw the other man had turned on the light above his bed and opened the curtain from across the window.
For J.R. Martinez, that answered his own question of why he had survived injuries that would have killed many others:
“I was kept in this world to use my experience to help other people with their experiences,” he says simply.
While taping the Dr. Drew show, J.R. surprised fellow burns survivor Jenna (15) who burned over 95 percent of her body during an explosion when she was only three years old, by inviting her to a taping of Dancing with the Stars, so maybe you spotted her in the audience!
