Disney star Demi Lovato says she is looking for a fresh start after a stint in rehab for bulimia, self harming and other emotional issues. She doesn’t feel that being in front of a camera right now would be conducive to her recovery so instead she is going to concentrate on music.
Demi (18) spent three months at Illinois’ Timberline Knolls in treatment for bulimia, cutting and other emotional problems. The “Camp Rock” star has since admitted that life was a lot darker for her than anyone would have imagined. The child star was cutting herself by the age of 11 as a way “of expressing my own shame, of myself, on my own body.”
Lovato also admitted that she had to leave the Jonas Brothers tour to enter rehab because she just was not taking care of herself after she broke up with Joe Jonas. That stress is what led to her alleged physical confrontation with backup dancer, Alex Welch. Demi was trying to do concerts having not eaten. Her purging was taking its toll on her singing, and she said of the confrontation with the dancer, that she was so “whacked out that I took it out on someone that meant a lot to me.”
This candid honesty is refreshing in the celebrity world. And Demi Lovato has taken an unusual and brave step. Rather than lurch from rehab to crisis and back to rehab again as so many in the public eye, Demi has chosen to step away from acting on the small screen, which obviously exacerbates her body image worries. Instead, she is still with Disney’s Hollywood Records and intending to focus on making music.
Meanwhile, the former “Sonny with a Chance” show will go on without its star. It will be transformed into comedy sketch show that Sonny and her friends are on called “So Random!” when it hits our TV screens in June.
