The main topic in tonight’s Celebrity Big Brother UK was the Wizard of Oz shopping task. The three housemates up for the public vote this weekend (Sally Bercow, Kerry Katona and Bobby Sabel) were all designated roles as Dorothy. First, they had to allocate roles to their remaining housemates.
Darryn Lyons’ role was the tin man. His task was to prove he has a heart. Amy Childs was the scarecrow. She had to prove she has a brain. Pamela Bach-Hasselhoff was given the role of the cowardly lion. She had to prove she has bravery. The wicked witch was Lucien Laviscount. Paddy Doherty was to play Toto. All other housemates were Munchkins.
Celebrity Big Brother UK housemates faced six challenges and needed to pass at least four for a luxury shopping budget. The Wicked Witch had to avoid all water and only drink the Wicked Witch’s Brew. At least one Dorothy had to stand on the Yellow Brick Road at all times.
The Tin Man and Scarecrow (Darryn and Amy) spent a good part of the day complaining about Bobby, the new Mr. Nasty of the Celebrity Big Brother UK house – or a “bug” as Amy called him repeatedly.
Toto had to howl and cock his leg in the basket and the Munchkins had to run and hide when they heard the Wicked Witch cackle. Paddy Doherty seemed to take this indignity very well, even when woken from a nap by the howl.
The Tin Man needed to hold still until oiled by a Dorothy when he heard a squeak. Bobby told Lucien his plan to collect his sweat in a cotton bud and put it in the watering can from which Darryn was given a drink. Nothing appeared to drip from the cotton bud but it was a disgusting idea anyway. Already upset by being considered heartless, Darryn was furious to be conned with the sweat trick, as some was put in his mouth. In the middle of lunch too!
Darryn called Sally a “vicious scary socialist” but seemed happy to be told “Big Brother things you’re doing great” as the tin man.
Amy Childs, as the scarecrow, had to answer six from ten quiz questions while being distracted by a giant pigeon. She was determined to show her housemates and the public that she was intelligent. She screamed as feathers were tossed at her and she was squirted with fake bird poop, but she managed to pass her part of the task, correctly answering six questions.
Her verdict on her performance: “I’m a scarecrow with a brain. I’ve decided.”
Jedward used Sally Bercow’s epilator on their legs, complaining about how sore they were afterward. Meanwhile, Sally told Darryn why she thought he was heartless. He defended himself pretty well, I thought. He didn’t go into the bathroom to comfort her when she was upset to be nominated because he didn’t think it was appropriate to be in the bathroom with a woman alone.
Am I the only one to feel sorry for Darryn Lyons over this?
As the tin man, Darry admitted to finding the task “very, very hard” even before he got his challenge, but over the actual challenge he barely hesitated before making each altruistic choice. He let the housemates have a Chinese takeaway rather than enjoy crispy duck pancakes with plum sauce himself. He rejected a glass of white wine to get a cauldron of fizzy pop for Lucien as Wicked Witch. Instead of the 30 min visit that he could have had with his Macaw, he opted to let Tara have a call from her new husband.
Darryn Lyons was crying when he left diary room, presumably about the macaw rather than the crispy duck pancakes. He didn’t even explain himself when the housemates were encouraging him to eat some Chinese food, which as part of his sacrifice he was not allowed to touch.
Tara’s five minute phone call with her husband was a huge surprise for her. Her husband told her he can’t stop thinking of her. It was a cute moment, thanks to Darryn’s sacrifice.
Bobby eventually apologized to Darryn although the latter said there was no need. That was before Bobby admitted what he had done, putting sweat in the lemonade in the watering can to give him to drink.
“Don’t worry about it,” Darryn Lyons said, but I think we will hear more of this in the Diary Room in tomorrow’s show.
The two men shook on the apology but Darryn still walked away looking the better man, especially when he seemed so genuinely happy for Tara getting her phone call. She did give him a very nice hug, though.
Sally Bercow found the Tin Man’s trial “an eye opener.” She now saw him as sensitive and with a big heart, she said. That’s kind of where I’ve been on the Darryn question since the beginning of Celebrity Big Brother so I’m glad Sally now sees this.
Bobby also admitted he had judged Kerry Katona unfairly, based on what he had read about her in the past.
So all in all, the Wizard of Oz task seems to have been a huge success. Several misconceptions were corrected among the housemates today and a new spirit of harmony seems to have descended on the house. Will it last?
Find out in the next Celebrity Big Brother UK show tomorrow at 9pm BST when one of the housemates – Bobby Sabel, Kerry Katona or Sally Bercow – will be evicted and have to leave the Celebrity Big Brother house.
