A baby boy was born to Penelope Cruz (36) and her husband, Javier Bardem (41) yesterday, the same day that Bardem learned he had received a Best Actor Oscar nomination for the Spanish language movie, “Biutiful”. The birth took place at Cedars Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles, as planned by Penelope herself. Originally the plan was to give birth in a Madrid but Penelope changed her mind, in order to give her baby dual Spanish and American nationality
The baby boy, who has not yet been named, is the first child for Cruz and Barden, whose low-key Caribbean wedding took place in July 2010. The couple began dating after romance blossomed on the set of Woody Allen’s movie, “Vicky Cristina Barcelona”. They had known each other as friends for around 12 years before that.
The Spanish speaking couple have yet to announce the baby’s name so it is not known whether it will be an American or Spanish name. Spanish magazine “Hola!” reported that also present at the birth were Penelope’s mother Encarna, her younger brother, her sister, Monica with her boyfriend, actor Alex Gonzalez, and Penelope’s brother, Deuardo, so it was quite the family occasion!
The baby’s birth adds to a great start to 2011 for Javier Bardem, who also picked up an International Star award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. Upon acceptance of the award, he took the opportunity to thank Penelope Cruz for her support and said was a “wonderful human being”.
