Joseph Son (40), who played one of Dr. Evil’s henchmen, Random Task, in the 1997 movie Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery was jailed for life with the possibility of parole on September 16 this year, for the 1990 gang rape of a Southern California woman. Now he’s in an awful lot more trouble as it is alleged he killed the man sharing a cell with him.
Joseph Son only arrived at Wasco State Prison in California’s Central Valley last month, after sentencing years after the gang rape attack. Throughout the 1990s, martial arts expert Son appeared in several movies.
The actor was convicted of one count of torture in August after his DNA linked him to the abduction of a then-19-year-old victim as she walked her dog near her apartment on Christmas Eve. He and a co-defendant, Santiago Lopez Gaitan (also 40) drove the woman to Huntington Beach at gunpoint, where they raped her in the back of the car, repeatedly threatening to kill her, hitting her with the pistol and telling her she was going to die. After begging for her life, the naked and badly injured woman was released naked and blindfolded with her own underwear.
Son was only convicted of the attack when he had to provide a DNA sample after pleading guilty to felony vandalism in 2008 and then violated probation. His co-defendant as, in January, sentenced to 17 years and four months in state prison.
The dead inmate (aged 50) was a parole violator serving a new two-year sentence from San Luis Obispo County for failing to register as a sex offender. He was found dead on Monday in the cell he shared with Son.
The California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation spokeswoman Terry Thornton confirmed that the death is being treated as a homicide. However, no details of the cause of death or why it was suspicious have been released. An autopsy is scheduled for today.
Both Son and the dead man were in the reception unit for new inmates at the prison, which houses approximately 5,800 inmates. The cellmate had been there since June 23.
