Mitch Winehouse told mourners at the star’s funeral on Tuesday that he wants to help others who are battling addiction.
He also said he believed that Amy had kicked drugs and was doing well at dealing with her alcohol addiction when she died in bed at her Camden, North London home on Saturday. That will be a shock to many people, even Amy’s fans, who believed her still to be an addict.
Mitch was in New York with his cousin Michael when he heard about daughter Amy’s death and said he immediately wanted to set up the Amy Winehouse Foundation.
He has the support of his local Member of Parliament, Keith Vaz.
Amy had widely reported struggles with drug and alcohol addiction during her life. However, her father told mourners at her funeral service that she had begun to “conquer” her problems. He said that she got over her drug dependency three years ago.
“She was trying hard to deal with her drinking and had just completed three weeks of abstinence,” he added.
That is not the widely accepted view of Amy Winehouse but toxicology reports from her post-mortem are not expected for a few weeks. Until then, at least, a question mark hangs over the cause of her death.
Meanwhile, the funeral of Amy Winehouse, said to be a practicing Jew, has caused controversy. The singer had many tattoos, and her body was cremated before burial. Both of these things are taboo within the Jewish faith.
