Amy Winehouse’s recent untimely and so far unexplained death has left her family devastated. But now it has also been alleged that Winehouse was in the process of adopting a 10-year-old St. Lucian girl named Dannika. She had apparently even contacted lawyers to start the adoption process just before she died.
“Amy was already my mother,” Dannika told British newspaper The Mirror. “I would call her ‘mum’ and she would call me her daughter. She took care of me and we had fun together. I loved her and she loved me.”
Winehouse and Dannika were photographed walking along the beaches of the Caribbean island a few weeks ago.
Winehouse apparently first met the girl’s grandmother during one of her many visits to St. Lucia. The family was shocked when the singer was found dead in her London home on July 23. Her funeral was held last week, with her friends and family sharing their grief.
But few would have known that the “family” almosy included 10-year-old Dannika Augustine, whom met on the idyllic Caribbean island of St. Lucia.
Amy had booked her ticket to visit the schoolgirl again next week. The child’s grandmother revealed the singer had already hired lawyers to proceed with the adoption, but her plans were cut short by her sudden death last week aged just 27.
Dannika was living in poverty with her single mum, who was struggling to feed her, when Amy took her under her wing during one of her many stays on the island over the last two years. Dannika’s mother, Nadia Germaine, 31, was willing to give her daughter up for adoption because she could not find a job and was struggling to bring up her family. She and the child’s father split soon after Dannika’s birth. He now lives in Germany and was apparently also in favor of the adoption.
Devastated Dannika said of Amy Winehouse, “She was the most amazing person and I was looking forward to living with her here or in London. I cannot believe she is gone. This is the worst thing that ever happened to me.”
Dannika’s grandmother, Marjorie Lambert, 57, who runs a beach bar, said she first met the star in 2009. Amy and Dannika became “inseparable.”
“They would spend all day playing, horse-riding and walking up and down the beach hand-in-hand,” said the grandmother. “Amy used to beg me: ‘I want to adopt Dannika. I want to take her to England.’ She was prepared to move to St Lucia to be her full-time mum.”
