America’s Next Top Model returned to our screen last night after a two week hiatus. In the previous episode we said goodbye to UK mode Ashley. That left 5 American girls and 4 English still in the running for the title.
Last night the models had to make and record a music video. The guest judges were Jessica Sutta from the Pussycat Dolls and Nadine Coyle from Girls Aloud.
The episode started with some high jinks, though. Sophie held Laura’s stuffed toy (a lion called Alan) over the pool and asked how annoyed she’d be if she dropped it in. Clearly Sophie would have been distraught as she made a desperate grab for Alan, whose ear unfortunately came off and he ended up in the pool. Kyle kicked the ear into the middle of the pool too.
It all looked distinctly like nasty middle school bullying to me, especially when Laura became very upset and explained that the toy was given to her by a friend Kevin who passed away just before she came on the show. Sophie had the decency to realize she overstepped the mark here and said, ‘what the hell have I done?’ Not cool, Soph’. Really not cool.
The girls got a visitor from Lisa, winner of last year’s America’s Next Top Model. Well, not really the winner: the winner after the winner got disqualified.
She told them the details of the task to record and perform a music video with the UK team mentored by Nadine Coyle and the US team mentored by Jessica Sutta. The teams even had names: Fiercely British and the United Sirens of America.
The UK girls seemed to find it easier to get to grips with the music and put their personalities in to it. Lisa put them ahead at this point but we all know how little that means. She even admitted it.
Then it was time for the girls to learn the choreography. Or try to. Tyra Banks was there to teach them the art of booty tooch. Azmarie refused to dress the part as a grown woman and she left. She regretted it later but I was with her: I just found this whole segment irritating. Or maybe it’s Tyra who irritates me.
The girls then went to meet Mr. J in the Playhouse nightclub, the backdrop for their video shoot.
The US team felt a little threatened by the UK team’s energy so the bar was raised. Kyle was singled out for particular criticism as she really looked lost with the choreography. She vowed to do better, though. Mr. J also had some wise words for Azmarie; he said she has great personality but she has to learn to keep her ego in check. But he says it is Laura who is stealing the attention from the other girls when she’s performing with them.
Kyle and Azmarie therefore both went before the panel as worried women. But the UK team were confident they had won the task.
First up the panel watch the video by the United Sirens of America and they had this to say about the girls:
Simone – they thought she was beautiful and they love her body.
Laura – Kelly loved her in the video and thought it was kind of nasty dirty punk.
Azmarie – Nigel saw a lack of commitment in the video. Kelly did not really get her voice. She did not own it. Tyra didn’t understand why she refused to participate in the booty tooch. Azmarie apologized.
Ebony - Nigel thought she committed too much, whatever that means and Kelly was not impressed either.
Kyle – Nigel felt she could have just chilled out a bit and that she was a little disconnected. They would like to see her push a little more.
The UK team video Fiercely British, seemed to be getting higher praise. Tyra loved their music video which she thought she was like watching a real music video. Here’s what the judges said about the British girls:
Kathryn – Kelly thought that her performance was really cool and sexy.
Sophie – she looks like a bombshell from head to toe. She put in Kelly’s favorite performance of the day.
Alisha – the judges said she looked really professional.
Annaliese – adorable, they judges said, remarking on her sweetness. Kelly loved her in the video.
So who would win and who would be eliminated?
The judges all felt that the UK girls made the best overall video.
Best video performance – Alicia
Runner up – Sophie
Bottom 2: Kyle and Azmarie
Kyle stayed in the competition and Azmarie was eliminated. When will these girls learn that refusing to take part in a task is suicide? Azmarie was clear frontrunner. Tyra (and I) were sure she’d be in the final and have a real shot at the title. But as Tyra said to her: it is about more than the looks and even the personality. She has to commit herself and show her hunger.
I would never have thought I’d be blogging this to you at this stage but Azmarie is out of America’s Next Top Model: British Invasion.
