Last week, we saw Jermaine Jones eliminated for trying to hide his outstanding arrest warrants. In the bottom three were Elise Testone; Shannon Magrane and Ericka Van Pelt, with Shannon eliminated. So how would Elise and Erika fare this week?
Let’s get straight to it.
The American Idol 2012 Top 10 were mentored by Diddy as the contestant took on Billy Joel songs. Steven Tyler said if you can’t sing his songs then you just plain can’t sing. Now that’s a challenge!
Oh – a heads up to set your recorder if you’re out tonight: Haley Reinhart and Lana Del Ray will appear on the Thursday results show.
The show last night started with virtually everyone crying that they made it in to the American Idol Top 10.
Let’s have a look at how the top 10 did last night, in order of appearance:
Deandre Brackensick was first and Tommy Hilfiger on styling took his hair down immediately. Result! But when DeAndre sang Only The Good Die Young I didn’t like it. He needs to learn to dance. It didn’t wow any of the judges but only Randy was honest enough to say that. Jennifer liked the vibe and I felt for Deandre a bit when Steven said it was “a little too happy at first.” Jimmy Iovine had reminded him to smile and he smiled! Not a great show opener, though.
Erika Van Pelt was next, with New York State Of Mind. I appreciated P Diddy telling her to tone it down a bit and be a New Yorker, get raw and show she has guts. The big shock was the image change Hilfiger pulled on Erika, though: from blond to black with a purple shine. I kind of liked it on her, and I love the song, but maybe not for Erika. But the judges did. Steven said, “just nice, outstanding”. Jennifer said, “that was really beautiful, I love the hair, it’s a Pat Benatar vibe, you let loose and took us home”. Randy said, “first of all, I love the look, it’s so different and I love the vocals. That was beautiful, go ahead and wear us out at the end of the song because you’ve got that”.
Tommy Hilfiger put Joshua Ledet in a tux and I liked that. But I wasn’t keen on him singing “She’s Got A Way” so I don’t know why Jennifer said she felt stupid saying anything negative. I agreed with her that Joshua needs to connect more with the lyrics. Steven said, “I think that you took a song that I didn’t know, you sang your life into it and make it come to life with your soul”. It figures that Steven doesn’t know the song that he could say that. Randy was right in saying Joshua has a great voice. But “ it was kind of a half half thing” for him and for me.
Skylar Laine was a little star struck by P Diddy in her mentoring session. Cute! She chose to sing Shameless. P Diddy thought she is forcing, over compensating but once she calmed down he felt he was in church. It was definitely out of Skylar’s comfort zone, as Randy said, and “a little pitchy” as Steven pointed out. But I kind of liked it. Like Jennfer said, she eats up any song.
Elise Testone has been in the bottom three for the past two weeks, so she had a lot to prove last night. I don’t know what planet Jimmy was on saying that not many people know the song Vienna. It’s a great song, just not sung by Elise. I was amazed by the standing O from the judges as I thought she sounded a bit off. “Everything was great,” Jennifer said. Steven said, “that melody was so fantastic, your song and your dress were beautiful”. Randy said, “I like what you guys have done tonight, you are unbelievably talented”. She is definitely talented, I just wasn’t too keen on her treatment of one of my favorite songs so I am looking forward to finding out what America thinks.
Tommy Hilfiger told Phillip Phillips that he needs help, style wise. Ya think! He didn’t lose the guitar as he was advised and sang Movin’ Out. Steven said, “You took that song and filled it full of sick.” It must have meant that in a good way as he also said it was “beautiful.” He even gave Phillip a scarf! Jennifer called it “awesome” and advised him to be himself. Randy said, “Hilfiger told you not to wear grey, you wear grey on grey, P Diddy tells you to lose the guitar, you don’t. I said it before, those that do, should, you are an unbelievably talented artist, stick to your guns, it was brilliant”. I didn’t quite get what Randy was going on about but I think he also meant that Phillip had to be himself and I agree with that.
Tommy Hilfiger agreed with Jimmy that Hollie Cavanagh was dressed too old for her age last week. She wanted sparkles! Instead she got a pants suit, which was still way too old for her, I think. She didn’t do too well on “Honesty” and she got some more honesty from the judges. Steven told her she was pitchy. Jennifer said, “Your voice is one of my favorites, don’t distract us by going off”. Randy said they know she is great and that is why they give constructive criticism.
Another person feeling the criticism from the judges was Heejun Han. P Diddy told him to put his ego away and learn from it. Jimmy added in that he should use it as fuel, or walk away. Heejun came on in a black tux to sing “My Life” low and slow. But he soon ditched the tux and upped the tempo. I liked the idea but all the staging played havoc with is singing. Jennifer said, “I loved that you brought a little fun to the show tonight, you didn’t hit the vocals as much as you would have liked to, it was a lot of fun”. Steven said, “Hee man, you know, I am a little tongue tied. Are you happy you took the piss out of that song?” Randy was just happy Heejun had a good time. So once again Heejun was treated as the novelty act bringing laughter to American Idol and I was trying not to throw things at the TV screen. You’re better than this, Heejun – please step up if you’re here after the Thursday night results show.
Jessica Sanchez is a huge fan of Tommy Hilfiger; she showed him a dress and told her that she should shorten it a bit. She chose to sing Everyone Has A Dream but in rehearsal P Diddy told her that he didn’t believe in the song; he thought she was over singing it with tricks. She ditched the tricks and earned another standing ovation from the judges. Randy said she has the consistency to win. “You are flawless and perfect, excellent mentoring, that was perfection”. Steven said, “When God was giving out vocal chords, you were so at the beginning of the line”. Jennifer said, “That was a defining moment for me, it was a beautiful thing”. So I would save Jessica is safe fr another week and she is quickly becoming a favorite of mine.
Colton Dixon told Hilfiger that he want to create his own style, punk rock with a mix of military but I agreed with Hilfiger that they had to do something with his hair. Colton chose to sing Piano Man, a song which Jimmy thought was made for him. P Diddy loved it too and wants to buy his record. The judges loved it too. Jennifer got goosies. Randy loved everything from his voice to his hair. “You are a rock star,” he said. Steven said, “Your choice of chords was amazing, you are a great singer”.
That was a fantastic way to end a show where Jessica and Colton stood head and shoulders above the competition. I think Heejun or Deandre will be in trouble in tonight’s results show but you are welcome to disagree with me.
