On the finale performance show the contestants performed three songs: his or her favorite song from the whole series.; one song selected by Idol creator Simon Fuller and his or her individual “new” single.
Jessica’s best performance was on ‘I Have Nothing’ by Whitney Houston, but for me it didn’t match up to her previous Whitney song. Phillip Phillips’ best performance last night was his single ‘Home,’ after which the judges called him a true artist, brilliant and a genius.’
The finale began with a performance from all the top former Idol contestants, all dressed in white and singing ‘Runaway Baby’ by Bruno Mars.
Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez were obviously popular finalists as a record 132 million votes were cast for the two of them combined.
The show began with Phillip and special guest, CCR’s John Fogerty singing, ‘Have You Ever Seen The Rain? and ‘Bad Moon Rising.’
That was followed up with Joshua Ledet singing Elton John’s ‘Take Me To The Pilot with special guest and former Idol, Fantasia Barrino. So we finally got to see Mantasia and Fantasia together on stage!
Then the ‘American Idol’ women performed a medley, ending with ‘I’m Every Woman’ and out came Chaka Khan.
Phiilip and Jessica’s music mentors got Ford Escapes and the top 2 got their own Ford Fusions. I had one of those!
Ahem! Yeah…right, on with the recap…
Rihanna performed next, disappointingly without any Idol contestants. Too good, obviously.
I was happy to see Skylar Laine back, singing a country song, ‘Turn On The Radio.’ But whoa, I was even more excited when she was joined by Reba McEntire, who’s only the second best-selling female country artist of all time.
Then Jessica Sanchez sang ‘I Will Always Love You.’ Now that was more like the performance I wanted her to give the day before!
I was still smiling for the boys’ medley of ‘We’re Coming to America’ and ‘Craklin Rose’ and I wanted Neil Diamond to pop out of somewhere but instead we got ‘I’m a Believer’ from ‘Shrek.’ Oh well, that’ll do! But then…Neil Diamond! The Idols al sang ‘Sweet Caroline’ with him.
Of course Jennifer Lopez sang too, helped out by Lil’ Wayne.
Ace Young proposed to Diana DeGarmo, and plugged Dave Webb jewelry. Nice.
Then Hollie Cavanagh made me cry singing, ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ and she didn’t have to walk alone as he had Jordin Sparks with her. Great performance; the song just always makes me cry.
There was the obligatory tribute to the late Robin Gibb fro9m the Top 12 guys. I almost wished they hadn’t done this as they couldn’t hold a candle to the Bee Gees. Oh but then Joshua Ledet sure did on ‘You Don’t Know What It’s Like.’ I have no idea how Joshua didn’t make it to the final.
I wondered how long it would be before Jessica Sanchez sang ‘And I Am Telling You’ and then there it was, performed with Grammy winner Jennifer Holliday. I found it all a bit too angsty, so I was glad that Aerosmith then took to the stage. Well, I think I was glad. But this was further confirmation for me that the ‘Idol’ judges really shouldn’t get up on the stage…unless it’s to jump in to save and amazing singer like Jessica.
I loved the final song from the final two, Phillip and Jessica: ‘Up Where We Belong.’ It suited Phillip better, of course, which I’m afraid suited me just fine.
Can we have the winner, already!
Say what? Yes! Phillip Phillips is the ‘American Idol’ 2012. Loving that result! How about you? I know I switched allegiance late to Phillip (after Joshua’s exit, although that was more a feeling that Joshua was going to win, rather than wanting him to win. Shows what I know!) Phillip Phillips, ‘a true artist,’ won ‘American Idol.’ What do you think to that, then?
