The boys kicked off the latest season of “American Idol” in style and probably set Facebook alight with the new online voting. So what did the girls bring to the party?
First up was Tatynisa Wilson singing “Only Girl (in the World)” and she split the judges immediately. Steven thought it was “beautiful” but as Jennifer pointed out, the start was “a little bit shakey” although she “brought it home” according to her. Randy thought it was “just ok”. Once again, Randy appears to be this season’s sensible judge.
Naima Adedapo gave us “Summertime” next and it is just what America needs, apparently, “an exotic flower in a rose garden”. Oh please! It was OK, but nothing special.
Kendra Chantelle’s “Impossible” performance was declared “hot” by Steven and “amazing” by Jennifer. We agree with Randy; we “really liked it” too!
Rachel Zevita gave a “Criminal” performance next, too Broadway and not the real her, the judges thought. And we thought: why would you do that on your first (maybe last) show?
Karen Rodriguez’s bilingual performance of “Hero” wowed the judges but it was unoriginal.
Lauren Turner is no “Seven Day Fool”. It was “Amy Winehouse meets Florence and the Machine” according to Jennifer. Steven called it “spectacular” but we agree that she held back a little.
Was Ashton Jones all confidence over performance? As Jennifer point out, she has “all the makings of a diva” but we have to agree with Randy: “I thought you were bigger than that.”
Julie Zorilla’s “Breakaway” was universally considered the wrong song and the judges wanted more connection to the lyrics.
Haley Reinhart’s “Fallin’” was “just great” according to Steven. And Jennifer commented how it showed the “different colors” in her voice. Once again, though, Randy “didn’t really get it”. Maybe it was the song, but Haley’s husky growl is worth listening to again.
15 year old Thia Megia wowed the judges with “On My Own”, who all hailed it “beautiful”. However, we bet it’s only a matter of time before they want her singing age-appropriate songs.
Lauren Alaina tried a little too hard with “Turn on the Radio” and the judges tried to reassure her she’s a natural and can tone it down a little. Randy likened her to both Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood. We’re marking her out now as a potential “American Idol” winner.
Pia Toscano’s “I’ll Stand By You” was “Unbelievable. Gorgeous,” according to Steven. And Randy said “you just put yourself in the top with that performance.” Enough said!
So, we’ve seen our top 24 and now comes the hard part. Only 5 guys and 5 girls will get through. Who do you want to see make the cut?
