It’s quite a month for new father Matt Damon, who discovered over the Internet that The Bourne Legacy will continue without him – and Bourne. Damon was stunned, but will the movie work without its amnesiac title character?
Matt Damon remains cynical. He believes they just want to milk the Bourne franchise he left when former director, Paul Greengrass, quit. Damon vowed to make no more Bourne movies. However, he could have a change of heart before filming begins in 2012.
For us, Damon is Bourne. It seems the film-makers agree. Damon was never going to be replaced in the role. “Matt was completely not an option, and personally I couldn’t imagine trying to replace him,” says new director, Tony Gilroy. Instead, we will get to learn more about the secret CIA organisation that transformed Bourne into a lethal weapon.
No, it’s not going to be another one of those awful ‘shower’ scenes that stretch the audience’s patience and insult their intelligence. “It’s not a dream sequence… You thought that was the whole world, but it was a small piece of what was going on,” explained Gilroy.
“‘Ultimatum’ exploded at the end with people arrested. We deal with that as a reality; it has ramifications that echo out into the larger world. And of course, Jason Bourne is still alive and out there in the world. I don’t want to go beyond that, because the last thing I need is for every blogger to be second guessing,” Gilroy stated.
Oh come on! We have to speculate, don’t we? It would be rude not to! What will the Bourne Legacy be like without the title character? Has the Bourne ‘franchise’ outlived its popularity? Or will you be lining up for your cinema tickets when The Bourne Legacy opens in 2012?
