Survivor 2011 Recap: Tribes Merge and Matt Heads to Redemption Island

Last night on “Survivor: Redemption Island”, the tribes merge and sparks flew with the newly-formed “Murlonio” tribe.

The show started with Matt pretty confident he could beat Sarita in the challenge, talking up her tribe. But his confidence seems misplaced. Everyone got to see the challenge: a toe-hold challenge between two walls. This should have favored Sarita with her smaller feet. She certainly seemed more comfortable than Matt and her tribe-mates cheered her on. In contrast, Matt only really had Phillip cheering him on (bless him!). But Sarita falls. Shock, horror! So Matt gets to return.

At the picnic, including alcohol, talk turned to the merge. Rob suggests the name Murlonio, which he says means “from the sea, united.” The thing is, it’s just the name of his wife’s stuffed animal. Hilarious!

Building a shelter, everyone began to stress about Matt and where his alliance would fall. Mike wanted Matt to go with the Zap tribe because others are under Rob’s influence. Mike wants Matt and Andrea so he promises them Final Four, even if it means getting rid of former Zappers and giving them access to the Hidden Idol. He wants them to vote out Steve and Phillip, then blindside Rob and take out Ometepe. Interesting, but will it work?

Matt was keen not to anger the God that put him back in the game and go against his Ometepe alliance. Matt playing the God card may be strategic rather than genuine but Mike was still feeding in to it, while Rob had no idea what to do about it.

Then came the challenge of players balancing balls on a wooden disc while they stood on a log. With people dropping, Natalie bagged a surprise win. My money had been on Mike. The loss sent Mike into a panic, knowing he was vulnerable, so there was much talk of playing the Idol. Dumbass Matt also told Rob about Mike offering a deal to him and Andrea. It seemed like only a matter of time before Rob would kill Matt off but Mike offered Matt a lifeline in the shape of a note saying that if he and Andrea vote Grant, they’ll be in the Final Three, at which point I was screaming at the TV for him to ditch the Mr. Nice Guy and take it.

There was friction at the Tribal Council, with David and Phillip arguing about throwing a challenge and sleeping arrangements, before Philip waxes lyrical again. Then it was voting time! There was drama right away as Ralph played the Idol for Mike. That entertained Rob because they didn’t vote for Mike. Matt is heading back to Redemption Island.
