2011 Newcomer Grammy Award Provides a WTF Moment

Esperanza Spalding won the 2011 Grammy award for the best newcomer, prompting many people to scratch their heads in a “WTF” moment. Even with an award known for its unpredictability, this was a big surprise. Few pundits saw this award coming for Spalding.

The Best New Artist Grammy is always hotly contested and is the space to watch for future musical superstars. This year was no exception, with both Drake and Justin Bieber being thrown over for jazz singer Esperanza Spalding.

You were probably asking yourself “Who?” We wouldn’t blame you! Her name does not exactly trip off the tongue and ten seconds before the award was given, when the nominations were read out, a large percentage of people would have never heard of Ms. Spalding, the woman now considered to be the Best New Artist, ahead of Justin Bieber, Drake and quite a few other emerging acts.

As we all no doubt know, hell hath no fury like a spurned teenager with Internet access. Esperanza’s Wiki page was subjected to an onslaught of teen angst as verbal attacks and physical threats to her person were spewed out within moments of her surprise win. All have now been taken down, but it’s clear that Bieber fans are upset at the victory.

So, how are you coping with the shock? Are you going to be demanding recount or are you pleased that the phenomenal talent of Esperanza Spalding has been rewarded with the Best New Artist Grammy 2011?
