“So You Think You Can Dance” Finale Begins Tonight

The two-night season finale of “So You Think You Can Dance” starts tonight with finalists Sasha, Melanie, Marko and Tadd hoping to impress judges Nigel Lythgoe, Mary Murphy and guest judges Katie Holmes and Kenny Ortega, to be crowned America’s Favorite Dancer.

Now we hear from Mary Murphy about the final four, her favorite moment this past season, and working with the celebrity guest judges.

The final four did not surprise her, except she thought that Ricky might have made it this far, she says. She didn’t admit whose place she thinks Ricky should have taken but she did go on to talk about the “journey” Tadd has taken, dancing outside his own style every week. She is pretty sure that none of the other contestants would be able to do his b-boy tricks.

“When you get a b-boy that can transform that quickly it definitely gets all of our attention.”

She points out that Marko and Tadd “have a spiritual quality that radiates from them, a love of dance you feel when you’re live in the studio audience.” That’s a very special thing.

Melanie, she says, took the judges’ breath away from her very first audition.

“She is so fascinating to watch and has such tremendous power and amazing technique she can make things look effortless and seamless.”

As Mary Murphy points out, it is rare to have both technique that is so good and yet can also act a role too. Melanie has it all.
“I adore her and it’s been amazing to watch her. I’ve said before on air that some of her numbers, especially the statue, I felt privileged sitting there and witnessing magic,” says Mary.

Sasha “is definitely that fighter and underdog,” says Mary. She has been in the bottom two, but Mary admires “her stage presence and the fearlessness.” She has also really moved the judges with some of her performances, despite her occasional lack of technique.

So did Mary Murphy regret having to send anyone home? She said the hardest to see let go was Iveta.

“I thought she could have stayed a few more weeks. She had grown so much, worked so hard over the last few years and had given up so much to spend time on training for ‘So You Think You Can Dance’ while she keeps her current world champion title,” said Mary.

Mary’s favorite moment of this “So You Think You Can Dance” season was when Melanie and Marko danced the statue number. “When he picked her up and turned her around the hair went up on my arms,” she said. She doesn’t often get that feeling when watching dancers.

So what did she think to the guest judges on “So You Think You Can Dance” and Lady GaGa?

“I felt every single guest judge was a fan of the show,” she said, and each had their favourites.

Of course, she wouldn’t tell us who was whose favorite dancer, but who is yours?

A world champion has gone; people from the previous bottom three spots went through. Did the right people go through to the season finale? Who would you like to see as the winner?

“So You Think You Can Dance,” featuring guest judges Katie Holmes and Kenny Ortega, airs tonight at 8/7c on Fox. The results show, featuring Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Robin Antin, Lil’ C, Tyce Diorio and Sonya Tayeh as guest judges, airs Thursday from 8/7c on Fox.
